What is Sufi Music, Where is Sufi Music Performed?
What is Sufi Music
Sufi music is an Islamic music. Unlike other music genres, it is performed not to entertain, but to be closer to Allah. Sufi music, which enables the rhythmic expression of religious feelings, is a type of music performed with breath, rhythm, and touch. Sufi music involves rhythm, lyrics, and dance, all of which remind people of Allah. The ney (reed flute) and bendir (frame drum) are the most commonly used instruments in Sufi music. In Bektashism and Alevism, which are Sufi interpretations of Islam, love and passion for Allah are expressed through music performed with the divan sazı (long-necked lute).
The history of Sufi music dates back to the Ottomans' acceptance of Islam. This music, which gained more attention over time, continues its existence today in deyiş (lyrical poems), demes (spiritual gatherings), and ilahis (hymns).
Where is Sufi Music Performed
Historically, Sufi music was performed in dervish lodges (tekke) and hermitages (zaviye). Today, ilahis, deyiş, and demes are still sung in various settings. After the closure of the tekkes, Sufi music began to be performed in more limited spaces.
